Auto Manufacturers Catch Huge Break On Tariffs

FreightWaves Founder & CEO Craig Fuller shares his thoughts on the Trump administration’s recent change in tariff policy that is impacting auto manufacturers.

The auto manufacturers received a huge concession yesterday, with tariffs being removed on raw materials and components – something that will ease pressure on domestic car manufacturing.

Like the electronics concessions, the Administration has shown willingness to offer concessions and exclusions to specific industries, but doesn’t appear willing to drop tariffs broadly.

$WERN, a barometer of the truckload sector with heavy consumer/retail exposure had its first quarterly loss in over a decade, blaming soft freight on the trade war. Werner is a bellwether with a very strong network, suggesting that no trucking company, no matter how well they are operated, will be spared in the trade war fallout.
