Hot-rod vibes: Full-custom '24 389 pulls dump trailers, fronts a 379 grille shell and so much more
At the 2025 Mid-America Trucking Show, Brandon Smith’s 2024 Peterbilt 389 stood out in the New Truck Bobtail category, earning a 2nd-place trophy for its clean and low custom style. Representing Smith Transport out of Raleigh, North Carolina, Smith’s goal wasn’t to go over the top, but to create a smooth, hot rod-inspired ride with just the right balance of subtlety and detail.
Built in collaboration with 12 Gauge Customs and Jordan Hitchcock of MBH Trucking out of Webberville, Michigan, the truck features a 379-style grille shell, shaved headlights, watermelon LEDs, and a stainless-heavy look from front to back. It rides low thanks to a 12 Gauge Customs air ride and a 2.5-inch body drop, while bus glass and old-school breathers help give it a timeless feel. Inside, the button-tuck interior with suede-wrapped dash and matching sleeper keeps the clean aesthetic rolling.
Other standout touches include CNC-machined surrounds for the rear cab lights, custom mirror brackets, and a new deck plate with an aggressive tread pattern. With polished aluminum wheels, chrome accents, and hand-painted pinstriping tying it all together, it’s a build Smith hopes not only turns heads — but puts trophies on the shelf.
In this video, Smith walks us through the details of his 2024 389 and shares the vision behind one of the sharpest new trucks at MATS 2025.
